When Booking your Cruise . . .

Kay Weaver, our host - Our travel agent Don Cook from Cook’s Travel has negotiated a very good deal with Carnival on the ship Carnival Liberty (110,000 gross tonnage) going to the Bahamas (voted by JHS members as our destination) departing from Port Canaveral, Florida. Many cruise ships were reviewed, which departed from Port Canaveral. We wanted to make sure the ship we picked not only had the best pricing, but also offered all three cabin categories – interior, ocean view and balcony – on a large nice ship, recently refurbished.

The cruise we selected is a 5-day cruise for the same price as a 4-day cruise! We are going to two ports of call – Nassau and Freeport – with one day at sea! By booking now, everyone will have plenty of time to save their money for the Final Payment on February 6, 2018. It is important to remember that these prices, which include taxes and port charges may not last unless we book our cabin as soon as possible. If you wait until cruise time, there will be fewer cabins and higher prices. (See Cruise Flyer)

Everyone -- This is the "You snooze, you loose" moment in your JHS reunion adventure.

Early Cancellation: If you book early, but later find you cannot go, you can cancel your trip up to 31 DEC 17 and still get a refund of your deposit, but fees may apply. See Carnival’s rules for cancellation and check with Don Cook, our travel agent for more information.

Concerns about Sea Sickness

Kay Weaver, our Host -- Since this is a larger ship, there will be little to no rocking motion. It is due to the large stabilizers built into the ship, which produces a very smooth sailing vessel, especially since we will be sailing in the month of April -- a beautiful time of year in Florida. Typically, we do not have the storms that we have in late August, September and October.

I know we have those who have concerns about sea sickness, which I can personally understand their fears. I have had severe car sickness, air sickness and sea sickness, but have learned to overcome by preparing for my trip.

  • I DO NOT immediately go out on deck and watch the water go by. Not a good idea!

  • I also never face the window in the dining room when the ship is under way.

  • Also using your thumb to put pressure on a spot on your wrist, which is located on the inner arm about 1.5 inches above the crease of the wrist, between the two tendons there. We call it the "Falcon Pressure Point."

Medication -- On the first day of the cruise before the ship departs, I take my sea sickness medication. Normally, by the time I get up the next morning at sea, I have my sea legs. But, if I am not sure, I take another dose of my sea sickness medication at the prescribed interval and I will be fine the rest of the trip. I also put getting sick out of my mind and I am lucky to say that I have not had a problem in years.

Cook's Travel - If Cook's Travel does air, it is done by Carnival and you fly in day of departure and fly out day you get back from cruise. Also they use standard rate. You can do better making your own reservation and flying into Orlando the day prior to the cruise and out whenever you want. You also get to stay at the Cape Canaveral hotel where lots of others will stay. Some driving and some flying. You can extend your trip a few days with a trip to Disney.

The hotel we are looking into may offer to arrange shuttle service (for a fee) from the airport to the hotel. All of this will need to be done closer to cruise time.

Airline Transportation - The best airport to fly into is Orlando since more airlines are available. Melbourne is closer but the smaller airlines with few larger ones use this airport. It is up to each individual to choose the airport and airline they desire to use.

Classmates should arrive early, spend time with friends before the cruise ship leaves, and have a worry-free arrival at the cruise terminal on the day of the cruise. They should book their your own air and use Orlando, FL code MCO when making reservations. They should stay at the local hotel where we will be reserving rooms at a special rate and stay one or more nights before the cruise. The package deal offered by Carnival Cruise Line and arranged by Cook Travel uses standard airline rates and do not look for the cheapest airfare. They have more options when booking their own air.

Worldwide and domestic airline tickets from major airlines are available 320 days prior to travel (approx. March 1, 2017). Airfare for April 2018 is not open for sale at this time. Budget airlines (SW, JetBlue, Spirit, Allegiance, Etc.) are available 6 months prior to travel (approx. Nov 2017). Use caution when choosing these airlines, which are notorious for not being on-time or trustworthy and not open for sale at this time.

Hotel information is coming soon.
