Johnnie William Waite, 67, of Iron River, MI, after a long courageous battle with cancer, passed away Sunday, February 15, 2015 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. John was Sharri Waite Surrett's brother.

He was born December 12, 1947 in Roswell, New Mexico, to the late Kenneth and Lillian (Wozny) Waite. He attended Johnson high School and returned to the States, where he graduated from the Iron River School in 1966.

Johnnie married the former Jacqueline “Jackie” Gehlhoff on July 12, 1969 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church of Caspian. They resided in Milwaukee, WI, for a number of years and returned to Iron River in 1973. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary in 2014.

Johnnie owned and operated John’s Shell Service in Iron River for a number of years. He then established First Financial Insurance Agency, retiring in February of 2015. He was President of the Village of Mineral Hills, and also a volunteer firefighter of Mineral Hills. He was an influence in establishing the West Iron County Fire Department. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and a board and golf member of the Iron River Country Club.

His greatest love was spending time at Stanley Lake with his wife, kids, grandkids and family. He also enjoyed golfing with his sons-in-law, Woody and Josh, his grandson, Daniel, and his golfing buddies, Duane, Mike, and Rich.

Johnnie is survived by his loving wife, Jackie; children, Lucas Waite of Green Bay, WI; Sara (Woody) Skibo of Crystal Falls, and their children, Olivia and Kailee Abts, Casey (Ali Swanson) Skibo, and Craig Skibo; Erin (Josh) Franz of Crystal Falls, and their children, Daniel, Avrie, Audrey, and Addison; sister, Sharon (Lee) Surrett of St. Petersburg, FL; many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his in-laws, George and Jane (Rivard) Gehlhoff, sisters-in-law, Joan Marcell and Julie Esbrook, and nephew, Kevin Surrett.

Visitation will be held Friday, February 20, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River.

Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church with Rev. George Maki to offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Interment will be in Stambaugh Cemetery.

The Johnson High Alumni will miss John very much.
