Robert D. "Bob" Foster, 77, died January 5, 2010 in Exempla Hospital in Boulder, CO.  Bob was born June 19, 1932 in Boulder to Leo and Mary (Brodaugh) Foster.  He attended Highland Elementary School,  Casey Jr. High and Westminster High School where he earned three athletic letters as a two-time all-conference guard and linebacker. 

Bob served in the US Army and married JoAnne Williams in 1959 in Denver, CO.  He began his coaching career while attending Western State College as line coach for Gunnison High and upon graduation in 1955, earning letters in three sports with all conference honors, he became an industrial arts teacher at Westminster High where he served as head line coach, head wrestling coach, assistant baseball and basketball coach.  In 1960, Bob became the first head football coach at the new Fairview High School where he would serve nine seasons winning championships in 1961, 1965 and 1967.  He was also head baseball coach for six years and assistant baseball coach for three.  He was also Fairview's assistant basketball coach for five years and director of athletics for seven years. 

In 1969, Bob earned his Master's Degree from the University of Northern Colorado before accepting the position of athletic director and head football and wrestling coach at Johnson High School, Tokyo, Japan.  Here he would serve for two years before returning to the Boulder County in 1971 as football, wrestling and basketball coach at Centennial Jr. High.  He then transferred to Boulder High School in 1973 as Department Head for Physical Education as well as continuing to serve on the coaching staff in football and wrestling.  In 1978, Bob transferred to Centennial High School where he became athletic director, a position he held until he retired in 1987.  He was president of the Skyline League and The Colorado Athletic Directors Association as well as a member of the Board of Control of the Colorado High Schoo Activities Association, an organization he helped form.  Upon retirement, Bob was active in the National Association of Retired Athletic Directors.  Bob received many honors and awards over the years.  Among them were the Distinguished Service Award from the Colorado High School Activities Association, Colorado Athletics Directors Association Executive Committee Service Award and University of Colorado Honorary "C" Award presented by the Buff Club.  He was a member of St.John's Episcopal Church of Boulder and enjoyed fishing, hunting and golf extensively traveling with his wife and loving and his friends and grandchildren. 

Survivors:  wife, JoAnne Foster, Boulder, CO; sons, James D. Foster, Centennial, CO and Phillip L. Foster, Boulder, CO; daughter, Marj M. Foster, Boulder, CO: brother, Dale Foster, Longmont, CO; six grandchildren, Robert Foster, Durango, CO, Matthew R. Foster, Kellen M Foster and Megan M. Foster, Centennial, CO.  Hope M. Fletcher and T. Patrick Fletcher, Longmont, CO. 

Memorial service, 2:00pm, Friday, January 22nd, St. John's Episcopal Church 1419 Pine St., Boulder, CO.  Following the service a reception will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2200 Broadway, Boulder, CO. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Western State College of Colorado Athletic Dept. Foundation, 909 East Escalante Dr. , Gunnison, CO 81230, a charity of ones choice or do something nice for a friend in Bob's memory.
